O’s Notes: “Trane” evolved over his career, learning, experimenting but always staying out front and setting the trends on sax. He played with Miles, Monk and in his own bands. This Best of collection features John during 1956-58 while he recorded for Prestige Records playing tunes from his Miles Davis era. There is a nice mix of ballads and bebop but even his bop is melodic on tunes like “On A Misty Night”. His band includes Paul Chambers (b), Red Garland (p), Mal Waldron (p) and Donald Byrd (t). It is a strong chapter in the Coltrane book.
