O’s Notes: Saxophonist, composer Tony Malaby parallels Sonny Rollins’ The Bridge with his own turnpike project, The Cave of Winds. The plight of the pandemic led Malaby to practice under the NJ Turnpike near Jersey City. Those practice sessions inspired this release and the reincorporation of his Sabino Quartet with Michael Formanek (b) and Tom Rainey (d). Original guitarist Marc Ducret was quarantined in France hence replaced by Ben Monder (g). The resulting music is as chaotic as the turnpike underpass environment, with chirps, winds, wheezes, screeches and random noises approximating those of countless vehicles in every imaginable state. Welcome to the NYC-metro area buzz!
