O’s Notes: Tenor saxophonist, composer, producer JD Allen forms a new trio with drummer Nic Cacioppo and either Gregg August or Ian Kenselaar on bass for The Dark, The Light, The Grey and The Colorful”. The dozen compositions hit all those moods. While JD is in his prime at 52, he takes on the appearance of a young man from the late 1950s-early 1960s for the CD photos. The music parallels that level of insight into his craft. The program starts on the darkest notes and then eventually morphs into an abstract mode as things warm up.
