O’s Notes: This is a rare approach: poetry combined with jazz. The poems are the work of Paula Tatarunis; a New England based writer who has published over 100 poems. Her husband is Darrell Katz, founder of the Boston Jazz Composers Alliance and Orchestra. Katz leads the JCA Orchestra through a broad array of harmonies to support the poetry and put it in motion. French philosopher Simone Wiel, the focal point of the session, inspired Darrell and Paula. Rebecca Shrimpton provides the voice on most selections. We liked “Saint Julian” with some cool vocal effects from Warren Senders. The final track is warm ballad, “Like A Wind” with a poem from Sherwood Anderson and music from Abby and Norm Group and vocals from Shrimpton.
