O’s Notes: Delfeayo shared a prerelease of The Last Southern Gentlemen with us in our studio prior to a Jazz Arts Initiative Charity Event last May. We were immediately impressed with the quality of the audio: warm sound and accurate presentation. That is no surprise as Delfeayo is one of the few producers who take the time to make it right! The band is a quartet with Ellis (dad) Marsalis on piano, bassist John Clayton And Marvin “Smitty” Smith on drums. Ellis has a swagger that anchors the team in cool confidence over the thirteen selections, old classics warmed with tradition and grace. We never thought we’d jam to “Sesame Street”. Delfeayo’s trombone tone is exceptional as is the woody resonance from Smitty’s bass. The packaging and liner notes are fitting support to a first class performance.
