O’s Notes: This pianist is famous for his work in the late 1950’s – early 1960’s with Miles and Mingus. Bill was in the midst of a rebirth of sorts in 1980. It was characterized by further refining of what he’d already established, in a trio format. This 8 CD set exhibits a confidence that was simple yet very expressive. Unfortunately he died a week after these live sessions, a victim of his own self-indulgence, but the music was exceptional to the end. It’s a great memory of a jazz master.
