O’s Notes: This collection features the legendary Latin trumpeter Sandoval on his first two albums after leaving the band Irakere in 1981 do his own thing. Both were recorded in Havana on the Egrem label. Turi has Arturo with his band as well as the Egrem house band. The second album is all by The Arturo Sandoval Group. Sandoval shows versatility playing a wide spectrum including jazz, Brazilian – “Aguas De Marzo”, blues and ballads – “A Mi Manera”. He displays incredible range including crisp, precise highs on “Maria” and well-developed, extended solos. This is a nice snapshot of Arturo at the dawn of his life as a leader.
