O’s Notes: Trombonist Conrad Herwig leads a strong band for this live recording at the Blue Note in NY August 2008. He arranges eight of Hancock’s compositions in a Latin mode. They open with a little calypso on “Oliloqui Valley” featuring guest artists Eddie Palmieri (p) and Randy Brecker (t) who also appear on two other classics “Watermelon Man” and “Cantaloupe Island”. Bassist Ruben Rodriguez and percussionist Pedro Martinez put a capital L in Latin with their Afro-Cuban beats. We also enjoyed the mellow moments of “Butterfly” and “Maiden Voyage”. Herwig’s performance is solid but he shines even more as the leader breathing fresh wind into these classic songs.
