O’s Notes: Trombonist Conrad Herwig is quite a musician and bandleader having made highly lauded recordings focused on Afro-Caribbean music. The latest tribute is The Latin Side of Mingus, and it is superb! Herwig starts with a slamming rhythm section of Bill O’Connell (p), Luques Curtis (b), Robb Ameen (d) and Camilo Molina (congas). Add Randy Brecker (t), Alex Sipiagin (t, flugelhorn) and Craig Handy (sax, fl) to arrive at a powerful large ensemble. All compositions were written by the late Charles Mingus, who’d certainly approve of these arrangements. They bring it into today’s vibe with “Don’t Let It Happen Here” narrated by Ruben Blades.
