O’s Notes: The nice thing about Larry’s quartet is that it’s about more than just Larry on piano. That’s not to say Brown is lackluster, he’s on… as a player, an arranger and composer. But we must also mention Kyle Funn who adds a strong performance on trumpet and flugelhorn, particularly on “Plaza San Martin” where his melodies conjured thoughts of Miles and bassist James Fowler who walks us through “Sitting On A Cloud”. We certainly hope to hear a lot more from vocalist Bina Malhotra, limited to one track here, the gorgeous “Dindi”. Brown moves from upbeat bop to ballads on another strong performance, The Long Goodbye.
