O’s Notes: NYSQ is the New York Standards Quartet with Tim Armacost (sax), David Berkman (p), and Gene Jackson (b) with Michael Janisch (b) for this recording. Power of 10 represents the 10th anniversary of the band. They rearrange standards moving them more towards NYC’s modern jazz groove along with several originals that follow he same theme. They swing hard on “Deep High Wide Sky”, “Doll’s Phone Effect” and “Three Card Molly”. We also enjoyed the mellow take on “Lush Life”. This is a good club set that works as good background as well as intriguing listening.
