O’s Notes: This reissue (1975) is a part of ECM’s 40th Anniversary Touchstone Series. It is a quartet featuring John Abercrombie (g), Palle Danielsson (b), Jon Christensen (d) and leader Enrico Rava (t). They open with “The Pilgrim And The Stars”, a free fusion tune before settling into the tranquil tones of “Parks” that at 1:45 is more of an introduction to “Bella”, the highlight of the session. Jon opens the mysterious “Pesce Naufrago” followed by the energetic “Surprise Hotel”, a showcase for Abercrombie. This serves as documentation of the early days in the careers of a few of fusion’s finest musicians.
