O’s Notes: Danish Violinist Mads Tolling takes a big swing on his second album as a leader. He performs jazz-fusion with elements of his vast experiences ranging from rock based “Black Dog” to funk – “The Chicken”. The core band is Tolling’s Quartet but he adds guest artists Stanley Clarke (b), Russell Ferranti (p), Stephan Harris (vibes) and Jeff Marrs (d) to add punch. The central element of the session is the Playmaker Suite, three selections where Mads sets up his guest musicians to shine. Among these we liked retro fusion of “The Risktaker” with Ferrante and Harris. There are also a few ballads to balance the pace and a cool arrangement of “Blue Monk”. Tolling composed seven of the eleven selections including “Loki in the Pokey” a happy upbeat tune. The variety of styles is wide with something that should appeal to any jazz-fusion lover.
