O’s Notes: Brian Lynch plays trumpet and flugelhorn leading a swinging sextet with Alex Hoffman (ts), Rob Schneiderman (p), David Wong (b) and Peter Van Nostrand (d). Special guest Vincent Herring (as) adds punch to an already formidable front line. The Unsung Heroes are the underappreciated trumpet masters: Idrees Sulieman, Donald Byrd, Tommy Turrentine, Joe Gordon and Howard McGhee. Their music appears on this program along with two Lynch originals. “Heleen” and “Gone But Not Forgotten” are romantic ballads showcasing Brian’s warm tone but the majority of the tunes are swingers like “Marisa’s Mood” and “Out/Dancing Shoes”. These may be lesser-known works but they certainly resonate here!
