O’s Notes: David Helbock leads a trio including Johannes Bar, and Andreas Broger. Collectively they play over 30 instruments leading to an abundance of creativity. We were surprised by the sounds (varied speed tape recorder) on the opener “Voa IIza” but David and his team quickly settled into a fresh groove. The mix of crazy and normal is the theme for the Random/Control band but neither is overwhelming in this free, pop fusion experience. Transforming traditional jazz standards is the formula for the German-based ensemble.
