O’s Notes: Les Arrivants is a Canadian trio featuring Abdul-Wahab Kayyali (oud), Amichai Ben Shalev (bandoneon) and Hamin Honari (perc). They combine Arabic, Argentine and Persian Classical music forms in their brand of world jazz-fusion. The program opens with “City of Ashes” threaded with of East Indian instrumentation and hints of exotic belly-dancers. Guest artist Duden Bașar (qanoun) plays on three selections notably “Piroozi”. Reza Abaee (ghaychak) is featured on the final three songs, notably “Mohajer” also including Pierre-Alexandre Maranda (b). Towards the Light is dramatic, passionate and a unique fusion on art forms.
