O’s Notes: Japanese pianist Satoko Fujii has become one of the most notable musicians on the contemporary free jazz scene. She composed all seven of the tunes for her talented trio with bassist Mark Dresser and drummer Jim Black. They open with “Trace A River”, a very dynamic piece that includes isolated solos for each of them allowing the listener to fully absorb the explosive expressions setting the pace for the CD. The inclusion of space around the instruments in both loud and quiet passages has become a part of Fujii’s signature. It allows her to create random improvisation and quickly bring it to order without losing the listener. “Day After Tomorrow” is a peaceful number. “Kawasemi” has suspense before transitioning to a cool bridge and an explosive finish. This is among her best performances. It will keep your blood flowing.
