O’s Notes: Dena El Saffar is the composer, arranger and leader of Salaam. She plays violin, viola and ‘oud. Several other musicians in groupings from two to seven join her. Percussionist and drummer Tim Moore plays on all selections. Train To Basra is a collection of songs that are unique but all headed in the same direction much like passengers on a train. We expected variety and it is there with many different vibes centered on an eastern European and Mediterranean vibe. Highlights are “Queen of Sheba”, “Rast Saffari” and “Kashaniya”.
