O’s Notes: Trane 90 is a 4-disc compilation celebrating the 90th Anniversary of the birth of the legendary jazz saxophonist John Coltrane. Disc 1 showcases Coltrane as a sideman with Miles and Monk. Disc 2 puts Coltrane in the spotlight as a leader in trio, quartet, sextet and big band formats. Over the course of his career, John developed many relationships that led to the collaborations featured on Disc 3 including associations with Blakey, Rollins and Garland. The final disc titled Impressions captures some private recordings of some of his best work though the recording quality is sometimes marginal. The liner notes are as extensive as is the music extending beyond Coltrane to capture the time, the jazz movement and spirit. This is a can’t-miss set for jazz fans.
