O’s Notes: Veteran trumpeter, composer Dave Douglas shows no signs of fading at 63 years old on his new release Transcend. He performs with his Gifts Quintet including Tomeka Reid (cello), James Brandon Lewis (t-sax), Rafiq Bhatia (g), and Ian Chang (d). This is an ambitious, endeavor morphing Ellington’s Sacred Concert material into a unique statement of modern jazz including a dose of electronics. It is a thought provoking, courageous effort. “Argle Bargle”, “Come Sunday”, and “Oclupaca” are our favorites of the set.
