O’s Notes: Mike Jones with Strings is not a big band set nor a chamber jazz accompaniment but a tribute to the classic drummerless piano-jazz trios of the 19340s-50s where a guitar replaces the traditional drums. The strings in the title are represented by bassist Alex Frank anchoring the beats, and guitarist Graham Dechter strumming rhythms and percussive strokes as well. The music swings hard à la Oscar Peterson across eight classics in front of a live audience at Vic’s, Las Vegas. You’ll tap your feet, bob your head and wish you were there! “Kelly’s Blues”, “Oh, Lady Be Good”, and “Deed I Do” caught our fancy.
