O’s Notes: We normally associate saxophonist, composer Anthony Braxton with free jazz, but he is also quite adept at composing operas! This was an art form he discovered in his 40s and came to appreciate it, almost became obsessed with it, and use it as an expression, modeling himself in some ways after Richard Wagner. He celebrates his 80th Birthday with the release of his 6th opera, Trillium X. This is the culmination of his work in operas, and he is proud to have it documented. The production takes place in 4 Acts featuring the Prague Music Platform (PMP) Orchestra with 12 singers (characters) under the direction of Swiss conductor Roland Dahinden. The music is packed with mystery and suspense. The 8-CD package includes both a live recording of the world premiere in Prague and a studio recording at the Darmstadt Summer Course. Those familiar with Braxton’s free jazz work will find elements of it in some of the instrumental improvisations. Additionally, there is an extensive booklet that also includes links to a documentary film by Marek Bouda and an interview with Braxton and Dahinden.
