O’s Notes: Drummer Jonathan Blake grew up in Philly and migrated to New York where he mastered his jazz chops while continuing to maintain his Philly groove.“Trion“features Blake with tenor saxophonist Chris Potter and bassist Linda May Han Oh. They play 13 well-developed hard-bop selections over two discs, a live set captured at the Jazz Gallery in New York, January 2018. The program is mostly Blake originals with Oh and Potter each contributing two originals each. Blake states it well in the liner notes, “…a level of trust, love and joy…” between the musicians that we felt and appreciated as listeners. Their bond allows the best to surface individually and as a unit.
