O’s Notes: Futari is pianist Satoko Fujii and marimba/vibraphonist Taiko Saito. They have endured the pandemic reflecting on old and new compositions. Underground is their latest collaboration, constructed while sheltering in place. Each musician shared original music that the other interpreted and performed solo or as a duet, from afar. Their typical live performances have more spontaneous interaction while in this case there was ample time to reflect, record and re-record until finding an acceptable union. It is still free flowing but with more polish and excellent dynamics. This is the perfect backdrop if you can imagine walking through a maze, sometime scary, sometimes mysterious, and occasionally surprisingly pleasant.
