O’s Notes: Introducing Michael Manson, a contemporary jazz bassist who writes his own music. He’s got great chops and has assembled some of the best musicians in the business to help him on Up Front. “Coming Right At Ya” has great hooks featuring Jeff Lorber (p), Kirk Whalum (sax), Paul Jackson Jr. (g) and Lenny Castro (perc). We also liked “It’s the Way She Moves”, the title track and “Outer Drive”. Manson doesn’t stop there. Najee (sax), George Duke (p), Steve Cole (sax), Rick Braun (t) and Norman Brown (g) also appear during the session. With that much talent, it’s tough to lose! It also means there’s a lot of variety around Michael’s bass which itself is worth listening to.
