O’s Notes: Tito Carrillo is a trumpeter, bandleader, composer, arranger and 15+ year professor at the University of Illinois. He is a capable performer and demonstrates his prowess on Urbanessence, his second album as a leader. There’s a good mix of hot tracks with warm ballads placing him near the top of jazz trumpeter lists. Tito is joined by Troy Roberts (sax), Ben Lewis (p), Clark Sommers (b), Jay Sawyer (d) and Victor Gonzalez (congas). We liked the groove on “Crazy, Stupid Fine”, “Fly By Night”, “Momentum” and “Fire and Ice” in a strong session of mostly originals by Carrillo.
