O’s Notes: Ukrainian pianist Fima Chupakhin came to the US as a Fulbright Scholar in 2012, obtained a Masters in Jazz Studies at William Paterson University and has been living in New York ever since.“Water“is his debut recording and it is masterful, soothing and refreshing. Chupakhin surrounds himself with a strong international team including Yoav Eshed (g), Sergey Avanesov (sax), Josh Evans (sax), James Robbins (b) and Jonathan Barber (d). Vuyo Sotashe adds vocalizations on two selections bringing a fresh variation to the set. We enjoyed both the title track where she blends her voice harmoniously with the instruments and ‘Great Is Thy Faithfulness‘. There are six originals among the nine selections as Fima expresses himself spiritually while allowing band members ample space for pronouncements as well.
