O’s Notes: Guitarist, composer and educator John Stein is experiencing a Watershed moment as he steps down from teaching at Berklee to focus on performing music! He assembles a quintet with Teco Cardozo (fl, sax), Daniel Grajew (keyboards), Frank Herzberg (b) and Źé Eduardo Nazario (d). The recording was made in Brazil and you can feel the air on “Brazilian Hug”. They don’t miss a beat on Joe Henderson’s “Kicker”, one of four covers combined with Stein’s originals and a showcase for the entire band. We also enjoyed the romantic ballad “Dreamsville” in a strong set.
