O’s Notes: Trombonist, composer and arranger Ed Neumeister assembles a fine quartet with bassist Drew Gress, pianist Gary Versace and Tom Rainey on drums. Ed’s approach on trombone is expansive using a wide array of plungers and mutes to extract a colorful signature from his horn. He has played solo, big band and many configurations in between but we think the quartet is the perfect grouping for Neumeister. While he notated all of the nuances of the compositions, he encourages each of the musicians to improvise with their own interpretations. That leads to a rich, jazzy performance.
