O’s Notes: What Place Can Be For Us? opens with “The Door of No Return” with spoken word from Alison Crockett. It’s meaningful, relevant, and sadly increasingly relevant as the decades pass. We are singing the same damn tune. Branker’s band Imagine, has infectious rhythms that stick, and more importantly amplify the message. Walter Smith III (t-sax), Philip Dizack (t), Remy Le Boeuf (a-sax, s-sax), Pete McCann (g), Fabian Almazan (p), Linda May Han Oh (b) and Donald Edwards (d) accentuate the points and shine on the instrumentals. Branker’s work speaks to inclusion, purpose, exploitation and place.
