O’s Notes: Pee Wee marries his tenor and baritone saxophone to the NDR Big Band. Ellis plays a wide variety of jazz styles on What You Like. There are popular and blues ballads with vocals from Jenni Evans and Van Morrison along with the expected cool funky rhythms (for a man who emanates from the signature James Brown sound). There are also some cookin’ bebop tunes backed by the power of the large ensemble. We liked “So Doggone Good” and the brassy “Soul Pride”. Recorded in Germany in 1997.
