O’s Notes: French composer and trumpeter Yohan Giaume studies the musical lineage between Africa, Europe and America in an imaginary conversation with New Orleans native composer Louis Moreau Gottschalk, a romantic from the mid-1800s. Whisper of a Shadow Opus 1 is an enlightening album in music and message. Clarinetist Evan Christopher collaborates with Giaume and a powerful band that includes Aaron Diehl (p), Herlin Riley (d), Roland Guerin (b), along with guests Nicholas Payton (t) and Chuck Perkins (spoken word). The music is peaceful, bouncy and blue with meaningful lyrics on “Mascarade”, “The Passage” and “Cold Facts”. The symphonic sound speaks volumes, a majestic performance with memories that we need to shed in the hope of justice going forward. This is the first volume in a series that we anxiously await.
