O’s Notes: Sonya is a fresh voice on the contemporary jazz scene. She plays acoustic violin and viola in front of a mellow band that includes keyboardist Manuel Valera and John Benitez on bass. The music is all original except for a couple of covers notably “The World Is A Ghetto”. Sonya is from Milwaukee yet carries the genetic rhythms for Africa that are common in what she terms as Black music. Our assessment is that she’s on point with a sound that will capture the hearts of many, especially on the last four tracks.
