O’s Notes: Born in Canada, moving to the Bay area as a jazz artist, and living in Brooklyn since 2019, trumpet, composer, and educator Darren Johnston pushes the limits on bebop while touching several genres on Wild Awake. He leads a quintet with Dayna Stephen’s (sax), Jacob Sacks (p), Sean Conly (b), and Ches Smith (d). Darren adds vocals on “Joe Hill’s Last And Final Will”. The result is an abstract collage of seven original compositions.
