O’s Notes: There are some free jazz recordings that are seemingly random jam sessions with the only common theme being the key the music is played in. Lindberg’s quartet is a well-rehearsed unit, this being their second recording along with many performances. The familiarity is evident because while the music is abstract, it has connected themes and stories. Winter Birds has the freedom of the flying subjects but also the orderly coordinated harmony that make it easy to enjoy.
