O’s Notes: Latin pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba leads a fine band that includes bassist Matt Brewer and drummer Marcus Gilmore. This is a rather intriguing set of ten selections on two discs with two funky bonus tracks. While the moods are spontaneous and free flowing, there is enough structure to keep the listener fully engaged. Highlights are “Lennie’s Pennies”, the syncopated “Alafia”, “Fifty”, and especially “”Nueva Cubana”. They reached into the past and extended into the future collecting a wealth of data. They are here in the XXI Century making meaningful music out of chaos.
