O’s Notes: Dutch saxophonist Jasper Blom is the teacher. Trumpeter Ian Cleaver is his student. Zilt is a café in Amsterdam where they came together in a jam session that evolved to this album! Bassist Thomas Pol and drummer Wouter Kuhne round out the quartet. The program is primarily based on songs by Duke Ellington and Misha Mengelberg. I’d characterize the program as a blend of edgy improvisation (the brief Impros), with swinging jazz. We enjoyed “Rollo III”, “Rollo II” and “Blues After Piet” best in the set.
