O’s Notes: Pianist Kris Davis, saxophonist Tony Malaby and drummer Nick Fraser are the core trio for Zoning, a free jazz experience. Ingrid Laubrock (t-sax) and Lina Allemano (t) join them on tracks 1, 3 & 4. The music is energetic and creative especially “Sketch 46” with it’s squeaks and squawks! Surprisingly, “Charismatics”, a similar groove is more congested with just the trio. We preferred the sextet.
