O’s Notes: Russian pianist and composer Evgeny Sivtsov leads a trio with bassist Dan Chmielinski and drummer Shawn Baltazor. Sistov’s piano work and outstanding dynamics bring the compositions on Zoo to life, combining several jazz styles. We enjoyed “Post-Wild”, “New Anthill”, “Dragonfliesis” and the final ballad, “The Death Of The Last Dinosaur”. Evgeny spent the greater part of a decade in New York polishing his chops before returning to Russia when he was unable to get his work visa renewed. He’s finding a more developed jazz space in Moscow now and is certainly a large contributor.
