O’s Notes: Groove Troopers are a new large ensemble that plays new R&B with a strong dose of jazz. There are two drummers, three saxophonists, two trumpets, two trombones, a solid rhythm section, and flute. Vera Westera’s warm vocals are out front on half of the ten tracks. She sounds good on ballads like “Absolution” and “The Animal Stage” as well as scatting on the upbeat title track. The guitars bring the funk while the brass is jazzy. The instrumentals are also strong, especially the cooler “Nuria”. If you’re ready to swing with a little bit of a cool jazz, R&B feel, this is your ticket.
