O’s Notes: Take note: Michael Dease is a name you want to remember. He plays sweet mellow tones on his trombone that are like honey. That tone makes his ‘straight-ahead’ jazz accessible to a large audience. Check out his chops on “Can You Dig?”. There is a nice blend of brass with Brandon Lee (t) and Sharel Cassity (sax) on “Relentless”. The rhythms section is on top of things with Kris Bowers (p) comping, Matthew Heredia (b) soloing and Mark Whitfield, Jr. (d) keeping it all together on “Top of The Morning”. Dease wrote and arranged 9 of the 10 compositions. Take note, at 25 he’ll be around. You’ll want to catch him!
