O’s Notes: Saxophonist Frank Wess assembles a powerful nonet that includes some of the best jazz musicians in the business. Terell Stafford (t), Ted Nash (sax) and Peter Washington (b) are a few of them. The band performed live at Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola in New York as a prelude to this recording session. They play six Wess compositions and three covers. They are swinging on “Sara’s Song” with a crisp drum solo from Winard Harper. Steve Turre (tb) and Gerald Clayton (p) shine on “You Made A Good Move” before Wess slows down the pace on “Dementia, My Darling”, the first of two ballads. The tonal harmonies on “Sweet And Lovely” are just that with Wess, Scott Robinson and Ted Nash all playing flutes. The band comes together for the racing spirit of “Backfire” and then concludes the session with a foot stompin’ blues number.
