O’s Notes: Ira B. Liss leads his big band Jazz Machine for their seventh album Unexpected Guests. He collaborates on writing and arrangements with Dan Radlauer. As the title suggests, each song features a different lead soloist. Vince Gill sings “I’m Counting On You”, mandolinist Eva Scow shines on “San Joaquin”, the funky “Tapped Out” features rapper, tapper Leo Manzari, “Strings In The Wind” features Tina Guo (cello) & Greg Armstrong (fl), and violinist Nora German chops it up on “Violinspiration”! The variety is appealing, and backed by the tamed but powerful big band, this is certainly one of the best from Liss!
