O’s Notes: This band has been around for almost 20 years. It is a public forum for writers of new jazz. A concert series, the orchestra and writing competitions have evolved during this time. Many notable jazz artists have performed with and grew out of the organization. Laura Andel, David Harris, Darrell Katz and Warren Senders are the composers for this CD. Most of the music leans towards free jazz but there are a couple of songs that are more traditional jazz. Rebecca Shrimpton adds soaring vocals on “The Red Blues” before the very dynamic “Red Blue”. Both are part of Darrell’s Hemphill suite. We also liked Warren’s “Bats”. There’s a lot of excitement and creativity throughout the set.
