O’s Notes: This string quartet features Jeremy Cohen (violin), Kayo Miki (violin), Emily Onderdonk (viola) and Joel Cohen (cello). They are playing a mix of jazz, tango, pop, bluegrass and funk vs. normal chamber music. Before listening to this CD, we hadn’t witnessed a chamber quartet that could groove with the music so well. They play 18 newly arranged classics that all swing nicely. They did a fine job on “Pick Up The Pieces” capturing all of the essence of the horns and scratching guitar all on strings. We also liked “Harlem Nocturne” and “What Is Hip”. Chamber quartets typically sound like cartoon music but QSF transformed the sound enhancing the appeal.
