O’s Notes: Cutting to the chase, this is a winner! This is a super collection combining a wide variety of New Orleans style jazz from Mayfield’s previous Basin Street recordings. It has romantic ballads like “Mo Better Blues” with soothing trumpet passages from Mayfield. Take note of the fine work from pianist Ellis Marsalis on “Fatimah”. There are some deep and painful reminders of the south and a few blues tracks, notably “Blue Dawn” with guest Wynton Marsalis. They wrap up with Kermit Ruffins and the Rebirth Brass Band truly celebrating on “Mardi Gras Second Line” by Los Hombres Calientes.
