O’s Notes: Visions Jazz Ensemble (VJE) is a septet with Sam Butler (t), Garrett Fasig (t-sax), Nick Recktenwald (t), Jeff Parker (tb, b-t), Dan Ventura (p), Jacob Smith (b), and Francis Bassett-Dilley (d). VJE reimagined thirteen college fight songs with cool, jazzy arrangements making some almost unrecognizable, but certainly enjoyable to jazz fans. Among the best are “Anchors Aweigh”, “Glory Glory”, “Fight On”, and “Rocky Top”. Guest artist Wycliffe Gordon (tb) is featured on “Hot Time In The Old Town Tonight”, his alma mater Florida A&M’s fight song. Surprisingly, they sound much better than anticipated, way more than we hear from the marching bands.
