O’s Notes: The Apple Jazz Band sounds rich and full with a swinging rhythm section and a wealth of brass led by Bertini on trumpet. The energetic solos extend to Dave Gannett (b) and Dave Hanlon (d) on “A Train”. They give “Bye Bye Blackbird” a New Orleans marching band twist with tuba and trombone interplay and rollicking organ solo from Tom Rau. These are just the first two songs of a 2-disc set with a wealth of good selections, excellent arrangements and fine solos. They really swing on “When You’re Smiling” and Ronnie Leigh leads several warm vocal tracks notably “Stormy Monday Blues”. This is a great collection of classic performances of the Apple Jazz Band from 1997 to 1999. This is big band done exceptionally well with some bonus comedy from Dave Gannett.
