O’s Notes: Denver-based pianist Ben Markley arranges seven of drummer Ari Hoenig’s compositions for Ari’s Funhouse, performed by a large ensemble. Steve Kovalcheck (g) adds electrifying solos on “Birdless” and “Green Spleen”, as do Peter Sommer (t-sax), John Gunther (t-sax) & Dan Jonas (t) on “Lines of Oppression”. Greg Gisbert (t) does a fine job leading “For Tracy” and Marley shines on “Arrows and Loops”. This is a balanced band with lots of bright spots.
