O’s Notes: Composer, co-producer and arranger Andrew Rathbun assembles a talented ensemble that performs over two discs. Quinsin Nachoff (t sax, cl), Tim Hagans (flugelhorn), Alan Ferber (tb), Jeremy Siskind (p) and Bill Stewart (d) all make notable contributions. Margaret Atwood wrote the lyrics (excerpts from poems). Vocals from Luciana Souza (disc 1) and Aubrey Johnson (disc 2) bring additional depth and color to the work. There are two movements “Two Islands” and “Power Politics” with three chapters each on disc #1. Disc #2 leads with ”Fractured”, a piece that is as disjointed as recent American politics followed by three selections from a larger Rathbun composition. We preferred the first disc.
